Who Draws the Line on Radical Environmentalism?

In my opinion, there is always some group of people who become so radical that they give their particular movement a bad name. John Wade is the type of person who makes me wary of the environmental movement. An upper middle class teenager decides that he wants to save the world by destroying property that he and his friends decide is “bad.” I honestly do believe he was just a self-righteous, privileged teenager who thought he knew everything about everything and, instead of instituting any change, he ended up in jail (instead of going to college) and his antics most likely never made it to the evening news. He claimed he tries to always “think logically,” but I still do not see the logic behind defacing property or filling cars with glycerol. All he has done is cost someone income, someone who is most likely not out to destroy the world, but just trying to earn a living. Wade also made the remark that there was no possible way to connect his actions to terrorism. While I do not believe him to be a terrorist, I do see the connection. Wade thought that the construction work was ruining the environment and so he wanted to destroy a symbol of the construction, the mall. The 9/11 terrorists thought that America is ruining the world and so they wanted to destroy our symbols, the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Wade also made the comment that he wished his “one shot” had been more effective – another unsettling connection to 9/11. I have little respect for individuals who are willing to sacrifice so much for such ineffective methods that often end up turning more people away from their movement than for it.
